With the celebration of the birth of Jesus among us just now, you might wonder about His family. Mary and Joseph are the parents and they have plenty of relatives. The reason He was born in Bethlehem had to do with Joseph’s family origin.
In a text found mid way in Mathew, Jesus asks a poignant question on this very subject:
Matthew 12:46-50 (NIV2011)
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him.
47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?”
49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers.
50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Even as Prince of Peace, Jesus does not give in to exclusivity, but rather includes the potential of all of us being in His family. He then shows us all the way to the cross and escaping the tomb as an indication as to how we are related. Join His family today. You can do so at The Salvation Army. There’s someone there waiting to receive you.
